HEIGHT: | 40 - 60 feet | SPREAD: | 10 - 15 feet | DISTINCTIONS: | Slim to broadly conical; reddish brown peeling bark; flattened branchlets with soft, scale-like leaves; can be sheared; full sun, scraggly foliage in partial shade. | LIMITATIONS: | High moisture requirement; winter injury in exposed, windy sites; grows best in SC with western exposure; some turn yellowish in winter. Browsed by moose and deer. | HARDINESS: | SC, SE (Zone 3-4) | ORIGIN: | Northeast United States and southeast Canada. | CULTIVARS: | ‘Degroot's Spire’ Narrow columnar form; dense, dark green, twisted foliage, purplish in winter; slow growing; 20' tall, 4'-5' wide.; ‘Nigra’ Pyramidal form; good dark green foliage, retains color in winter; 20'-30' tall, 4'-5'wide.
