SPREAD:5 - 8 feet
DISTINCTIONS:Species has irregular, columnar habit; tolerates cold, wet soils but grows well in upland soils; most attractive in its natural environment.
LIMITATIONS:Can look sparse and unattractive in a landscape; slow growth.
HARDINESS:INT, SC, SE, W (Zone 2)
ORIGIN:Central, interior, and western Alaska and into Canada from the northern limits of trees south to British Columbia, Manitoba, Minnesota and New Jersey.
CULTIVARS:‘Fastigiata' Narrow columnar form, supposedly grown at Versailles in 1915; 'Golden' broad, upright form; blue-grey needles with yellow cast on top; 10'-25' tall and 10' - 12' wide. See entry under Evergreen Shrubs also.
