SPREAD:18 - 25 feet
DISTINCTIONS:INVASIVE. Fast growing; salt tolerant; clusters of flowers in spring; purple-black fruits; well branched, flower spikes held up from the branches.
LIMITATIONS:INVASIVE. Susceptible to black knot disease; suckers at the base unless grafted onto European bird cherry or Amur chokecherry root stock. Should not be planted as it spreads aggressively and competes with native vegetation.
HARDINESS:INT, SC, SE (Zone 2)
ORIGIN:North America
CULTIVARS:‘Canada Red’ young leaves are green and turn maroon in early summer; flowers pinkish-white; redder leaves and straighter trunks than ‘Shubert’; susceptible to dieback in INT.‘Shubert’ young leaves are green and turn maroon in early summer; white flowers.
