HEIGHT:60 - 100 feet
SPREAD:25 - 30 feet
DISTINCTIONS:Pyramidal when young, becoming more irregular in shape with age; needles in bundles of 3 or 2, 5"-10" long, green or yellowish green; reddish brown cones 3"-6" long; moist, well-drained soil, but can tolerate drought and alkaline soils; sun.
LIMITATIONS:The species is considered more of a forest tree than one with good landscaping value, however, many cultivars available from specialty nurseries; hurt by late frosts.
ORIGIN:British Columbia to Mexico; east to South Dakota and Texas.
CULTIVARS:Cultivar: subs. scopulorum Furrowed bark is nearly black; supposedly better for droughty conditions
