       Evergreen Tree
HEIGHT:40 - 60 feet
SPREAD:15 - 40 feet
DISTINCTIONS:Pyramidal shape when young, becoming broad and flat-topped with age; low branching with short trunk; 2 needles per bundle, 3"-6" long, straight or curved; cones 2"-3" long; tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay, an alkaline pH, and seaside conditions; prefers moisture but will tolerate some dryness; prefers sun.
LIMITATIONS:Quite variable in its native range.
ORIGIN:Europe from Austria to Greece and central Italy.
CULTIVARS:‘Arnold Sentinel’ Columnar form; 30'-50' tall, 4'-6' wide.; var. caramanica (P. nigra subsp. pallasiana) Smaller tree with pinkish gray or yellowish bark; needles and cones slightly longer than the species. See entry under Evergreen Shrubs.
