DISTINCTIONS:Western counterpart of eastern red cedar; species grows to 40'; glaucous, light blue fruits take two years to ripen; grows in dry, sunny locations.
LIMITATIONS:Slow growth.
HARDINESS:SE, SC (Zone 3)
ORIGIN:Western Canada south through New Mexico.
CULTIVARS:‘Blue Heaven’ Bright blue-green foliage; loose, stringy, conical habit to 20'; heavy cone-bearer. ‘Skyrocket’ Bluish-green needles; narrow, columnar shape to 15' tall, 2' wide. ‘Wichita Blue’ Steely-blue needles; pyramidal; 10'-15' tall, 5' wide.
