DISTINCTIONS:Small tree or large shrub, grown as specimen, border, hedge; long (1"-3") slender thorns; leaves emerge reddish purple turning dark green; fall color orange, red, purplish; white flowers; ¼” glossy red fruit remains on plant through winter; full sun; adaptable to a wide range of soils.
LIMITATIONS:Thorns may limit placement; susceptible to disease and insects.
HARDINESS: SE, SC (Zone 3)
ORIGIN: Southeastern United States
CULTIVARS:‘Clark’ heavy fruiting that persists through winter.; ‘Fastigiata’ columnar form with smaller flowers and fruit.; ‘Vaughn’ heavy fruiting; smaller size to 15’; very susceptible to leaf rust.
