DISTINCTIONS:Similar to Acer tataricum except for shape of leaf. Multi-stemmed or single-trunked shrub or small tree; good specimen, screen, or for planter; requires little care; clusters of winged fruits turn red in summer; can develop yellow or red fall color; tolerates full sun or light shade; prefers a well-drained moist soil; tolerant of dry soils.
LIMITATIONS:Poor survival in Kodiak and all of SE except sunny warm microclimates; some cultivars are not hardy in INT while others survive in the warmest sites with winter protection; best fall color when planted in sunny site.
HARDINESS: INT, SC, SE (Zone 3)
ORIGIN: Central and Northern China, Manchuria, and Japan
CULTIVARS:‘Red Flame’ exceptional bright red fall color. ‘Ventura’® (‘Durone’) (Acer tataricum x A. tataricum subsp. ginnala); upright form; vigorous grower; tolerates alkaline soils; orange-red fall color 20' tall, 15' wide; developed at the Morden Research Station in Manitoba.
