DISTINCTIONS:Broad rounded form with dense, low-growing horizontal branches; thorns; shiny dark green leaves turning bronze or purplish-red in fall; short-lived flowers have unpleasant odor; red fruit persist into winter; prefers well-drained acid soils but can tolerate dry soils; full-sun; effective as barrier or screening hedge.
LIMITATIONS:Thorns may limit use; susceptible to pests including hawthorn-cedar rust.
ORIGIN:Eastern United States and Canada
CULTIVARS:var. inermis thornless variety.
