DISTINCTIONS:Multi-stemmed shrub or small tree; smooth gray bark becomes reddish and scaly with age; edges of leaves are shallowly lobed and doubly toothed; seeds from small cones eaten by songbirds; tolerates shade and most soil conditions.
LIMITATIONS:Spreads forming thickets.
HARDINESS:INT, SC, SE (Zone 2)
ORIGIN:Western United States and western Canada
