HEIGHT:30 - 50 feet
SPREAD:30 - 50 feet
DISTINCTIONS:Rounded canopy; compound leaves; tolerates drought and occasional flooding; sun; yellow fall color; holds its samaras all winter; durable urban tree for difficult sites in SE; several large trees in Anchorage.
LIMITATIONS:Weak branches may break with ice and snow load; varieties with variegated leaves tend to die back to the ground; considered inferior for ornamental purposes when other maples are available. Grows as bush in protected locations in INT; potential for severe winter damage but recovers.
HARDINESS:SC, SE (Zone 3)
ORIGIN:Much of United States and southern Canada
CULTIVARS:‘Sensation’ slower growth; better branching habit; red fall color; 30' tall, 25' wide. Severe winter damage observed on colder sites in SC.
